About us
ExSeed is the leading European company developing modern solutions for manufacturing sunflower protein isolate. We are a deep tech startup devoted to bringing nutritious and functional plant-based protein to the market.
The challenges of today
Food is more than just sustenance, it gives us joy and comfort, it brings us together and shapes our culture and way of life. As the world’s population continues to grow, so do the effects of poor nutrition and the environmental impact of industrial food production.
In the developed world malnutrition has been solved, but a new health crisis has emerged caused by a combination of poor nutrition and dietary habits. Much of the blame is directed towards the food industry. We eat highly processed foods that, while meeting energy needs, are typically made from the cheapest raw ingredients and consist almost entirely of easily digestible carbohydrates.
EFSA recommends a minimum of 0.8 g of protein per kg of lean body mass to prevent malnutrition, but studies show that higher intake—up to 3 g/kg short-term and 1.6–2 g/kg long-term—supports muscle strength, health, and longevity, especially as we age. However, increasing protein through regular foods can lead to excess calories due to imbalanced macronutrients. Protein shakes help, but boosting protein in everyday staples is key. Meeting rising demand will require more protein isolates produced sustainably. Plant proteins like soy and pea are gaining ground but are not sufficient on their own.
Our solution
Our team at ExSeed successfully developed a novel 3-step protein extraction process for use with the byproducts of sunflower oil production, opening new possibilities for the food industry. Sunflower meal and press cake are readily available, but historically they have been underutilised and relegated to use as animal feed. By creating a commercially viable method of protein extraction from sunflower byproducts, we aim to introduce sunflower protein as one of the key ingredients of the foods of the future.
Why Sunflower?
Sunflower is a widely available crop in Europe and globally, offering a sustainable alternative to imported proteins like soy. Protein extracted from sunflower oil byproducts can be used alone or combined with soy and pea protein to enhance the nutritional quality of plant-based foods. Sunflower protein isolate has a better taste than pea and can outperform soy in some cases. Its amino acid profile complements soy and pea, achieving milk-like nutritional value, with digestibility similar to egg whites and better than chicken. Even the byproducts from isolate manufacturing are valuable — with the help of microorganisms, they can be enriched for use as high-protein feed in the fishing industry, reducing waste and adding value.
